SR9 Design on Target
- 11th May 2005

The initial design stage of the SR9 project is now complete, under the auspices of Peter Elleray.

The chassis which is now all carbon, incorporates a high stepped foot-box, essential for obtaining maximum downforce from the front defuser. The overall styling is very similar to the artist's impression shown three months ago. If anything the SR9 is lower and sleeker, especially at the rear. The overall size is 4.5m by 2m wide. Slim line gearboxes from Ricardo and Pankl are being considered for the transmission. Both allow the maximum rear diffuser dimensions permitted by the regulations.

The combination of a very low rear and maximum diffuser size bodes well for the aerodynamic efficiency of the SR9.

Front underbody design ensures that air is extricated from the front diffuser and fed into F1 style side pods. Top mounted exhaust outlets add to the SR9's purposeful look.

Performance and price are two primary concerns of the design. Raceability and serviceability are also high on the list of considerations. Quick access to all mechanical and electrical components can win races.

Inboard Intrax triple adjustable shocks have been specified and six-pot brakes will be standard.

Radical Co-founder and project leader, Mick Hyde elaborates, " We are very fortunate in having someone of Peter Ellery's expertise on the project. He has a huge amount of knowledge of both car design and construction techniques. We are also speaking to a number of teams to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of the competition, so that the SR9 addresses team owners' and engineers' concerns as well as drivers."

"Dunlop have confirmed that they will provide the factory with a 'works tyre deal'. This means that all our customers will benefit from the on-going development programme and have available a wide range of slicks, intermediates and wet tyre designs"
