Defending Champion Heads Donington Line-up

The 2023 Hagerty Radical Cup gets underway this weekend at Donington Park, with defending champion James Lay back in his RAW Motorsports SR3 to head the 27 car field.

PRO SR3

Lay’s main rival is likely to be last years SR1 Champion Daryl De Leon, who impressed on his SR3 debut at Donington’s final round last season with a second place finish.

Joining Lay with RAW this weekend will be returnees Ben Stone and John Macleod, both capable of a top finish to keep the pressure on their team mate.

As well as De Leon, Valour Racing have the experience of Chris Preen, along with former Ginetta Junior driver Hayden Chance and Jack Yang visiting from the US.

Both 360 Racing and DW Racing have two-car teams. Having started so well at Donington Park last year, Jason Rishover will be hoping to keep the momentum going all year. He is joined at 360 by Jacek Zielonka who raced with the team on occasions last season.

Peter Tyler returns for DW who also have last seasons SR1 runner up Ben Caisley stepping up to the SR3 class for the first time.

Mark Williams continues with Doris Motorsport  and Andy Lowe returns again as a privateer.

Chris Headlam raced in Radical’s back in 2019, but the former F3 Cup,GT, Lotus and Formula Ford racer makes his return too with RJ Motorsport.

Tim Gray has had much success with Radicals’ in the 750MC Bikesports Championships, but is on the grid for the Radical Cup with Jack Tomalin.

The former karter raced with Gray in the Praga Cup last season and has been a podium finisher in Formula 1000.

Completing the SR3 Class is ex British F3 racer Alex Khateeb, who after success in the Middle East with the Gulf Radical Cup, has decided to try his hand in the UK with North Motorsport.

PRO SR1

With both of last years frontrunners having moved up to SR3’s, the hunt for the new SR1 Champion is wide open.

11 cars are due at Donington, where former British GT racer Tom Wood must start as favourite. He is back with the University of Derby car and will be looking to add to his winning tally, as he lives within walking distance of the track too.

Alex Spooner is another returnee, who will be looking for podium finishes if not more in his Doris Motorsport run car.

Darren and George Knutton shared a car last year with Track Focused. But with driver changes this year, the solution was to have a car each.

The Knutton’s aren’t the only family duo in this years championship, as Bradley and Ashley Gaunt will both be making race debuts with North Motorsport.

Former Karters Oscar Joyce and Theo Micouris  will be making their car racing debuts too with DW Racing and Hart GT, while Valour Racing have two returnees in James Ockenden and Rob Greenwood.

Qualifying is on Saturday morning for 30 minutes from 10.25, with the first 30 minute race at 15.20. There are then two races on Sunday at 11.40 and 15.25. Follow the livestream on the Radical YouTube channel over the weekend.
